Publishing Companies

Music Publishers are interested about the copyright in the composition of the music. They just sign up writers, and songs. They collect the money and help the artist with the advertising and the Tv programms.
Copyright are the exclusive rights of the creator of the piece of music, of the original work of the song/the track. It includes the right of copy and to distributes the original work.
The Copyright last fifty years from the date of the recording of the original work.
Copyright is not the same around the world so an artist has to check the copyrights law and standards.

There is also the Performing Rights, it is the concept that pays the original songwriter for the use of their creation in a live scene.

Generally, the Music Publisher pays in advance the writer.
The Music publisher collects the monies of the writer for the use of their music on Tv Shows/Programs and movies, to the public, to the advertising and the performances.

PRS ( the performing rights society ) collect the monies of the writer in case of performances and reproductions of their music.
People who want to use music in a public area, need a licence from PRS.

Artist Management

What is the role of an artist manager ?

An artist manager is employed by an artist to expend the artist's career to the maximal potential.
He also takes control of all the business area. This include bills payments, major career decision ( which label to sign with.... ) but also negotiation of contracts.
The artist manager's role is to deal with everything which may affect his client's career.
The manager can chose the image that the artist should take for the publicity campaigns, select the booking agents and always make sure that payments are processed.

The artist manager is the representative of the artist for the Business world.

How much are managers paid ?

Generally, managers get 15% to 20% of the total earnings.
The manager is allowed to commission some activities such as ( Publishing compagny advances and royalty, MCPS and PRS payments, The record company advances and fees, and the appearances fees : Tv shows, live... ).

A manager is crucial in building career's artist, so it had to be a well connected person with some major clients/contacts

Live Performances

Artists should make people want to listen to their music and come see their shows.
For the venues, it is only about business, where competition is really rude.
First of all, the artist(s) has to present their promotional kit to a bookers. A promotional kit contains a biography, a photography of the artist(s), a cover letter, some press clips and a tape/CD of their music.
An alternative way is to send a demo, the best songs have to be on it. The artist also needs to mark the songs which are the most appropriate for the venue selected.
An artist can also set up his own show, by this way he will offer real value for money to his public, and the artist can be more creative.
There are some disadvantages, to set up his own show, it can be very expensive, by the organisation PRS ( Performing Rights Society ) and the local council. The artist will need a Temporary Entertainment Licence.

When the act gets more established, the artist(s) can be sure that a written contract will be around. The most contested subject is how the artist will be paid. The artist(s) must make money and not lose money.
The artist(s) have to think about the impact of internet and the social medias, as it can be a great opportunity for the success of their music.

To make a successful music event, the artist has to consult his costumers as to attract a wide audience in the future. A great advertising will make sure that people will hear about their act. Everything on the offer has to be clear ( which style of music, the price... ).

And most of all, the artist(s) have to check that all the licences have been made.

The artist(s) can also tour, and this is the best way to meet fans and attract  some new ones.
To be on tour gives more control to the artist(s), but it also means some costs ( where to stay, transports, equipment... ).
